The FLD Trading Strategy

Back to Contents
The FLD Trading Strategy is a simple trading strategy for trading the reliable and repeated interaction that occurs between price and the cyclic tool defined by Hurst called the FLD (Future Line of Demarcation). There are eight interactions between price and the 20-day FLD in each 80-day cycle, and they are labelled A - H. The FLD Trading Strategy is explained in detail in the Hurst Cycles Trading Academy, which your Hurst Signals subscription gives you access to.

Guidelines for trading on a Monday

Back to Contents
Because markets are closed over a weekend, there is often some non-cyclic volatility on a Monday (or the day after a holiday). You do not want to get to stopped into a trade while the market "finds the cycles". Statistically more losing trades are entered on a Monday because of this non-cyclic activity, and so you should observe these guidelines:
  • Even if your trading platform allows you to set stop orders over the weekend, rather wait until Monday, and set your orders a few hours after the markets have opened (see next point).
  • As a general rule don't rush to get into the market on a Monday. Only create your entry orders after the markets have been open for at least six hours. The first several hours of trading activity are often meaningless in cyclic terms.
  • Remember that a missed opportunity is better than a losing trade! There are always more opportunities.
  • Never set an order within the range of Friday's bar.
  • Consider giving your entries some extra room: If there was a well-defined high or low on Wednesday or Thursday then consider setting your orders a few ticks beyond that high or low (as you would set the order beyond the previous bar's range).

JM Hurst was an American aeronautical engineer who conducted extensive research into the financial markets in the 1960's and 1970's. He published a book called Profit Magic of Stock Transaction Timing and a workshop course called JM Hurst's Cycles Course in which he presented the Hurst Cyclic Principles which describe how the price movements of financial markets can be understood as being influenced by multiple "cycles". Each cycle influences the price of a financial market to move up and then down again in a regular manner.

The analytical engine that underlies Hurst Signals is a software application called Sentient Trader. As a Hurst Signals user you are welcome to join the growing community of Hurst enthusiasts who work with Sentient Trader to inform their trading activities. Please take a look at the many resources we have available.

There is no doubt that the better your understanding of Hurst's Cyclic Principles, the more you will benefit from Hurst Signals. For that reason we encourage you to learn as much as you can. Here are three White Papers to get you started:

How to use Hurst Signals

Back to Contents
Hurst Signals provide you with trading opportunities according to the interaction between price and the 20-day FLD. We have taken care of all the complexity for you, including performing an award-winning quality Hurst analysis, identifying the interactions between price and the FLD, and calculating the details for each trading opportunity.

This is how we suggest you use your Hurst Signals:
  • Consider the trading opportunities emailed to you in the Hurst Signals Email, and then go to your dashboard to consider the trading opportunities in detail.
  • Look first at the Overview chart which provides a good overview of the current phasing analysis. Here you can also determine the current direction of the longer cycles, and understand how the cyclic moves express themselves in the instrument (what we call the cyclic character of the instrument)
  • Then look at the 3-month view chart because that shows the recent interaction between the FLD and price, and you can determine how reliable that interaction has been.
  • Then look at the 6-week view chart for more detail. This chart also includes the 10-day FLD.
  • Watch the Hurst Trading Room videos which discuss current trading opportunities and learn how to trade profitably using your Hurst Signals.

Whatever your approach is, remember that the better you understand your Hurst Signals and the FLD Trading Strategy, the greater your chances of trading success.

Signal Charts

Back to Contents
Signal Charts are at the core of Hurst Signals. All your Hurst Signal information is presented on the chart in graphic and text format.

If you click (or touch on a touch-enabled device) anywhere on a chart it will increase in size so that you can view it more clearly. Repeated clicks will enlarge the chart further. There are 4 zoom sizes, after which the chart will return to its original size.

Signal Charts are all candlestick charts. Each candlestick bar represents the trading activity of a period of time as described under the cycles topic. Hurst Signal charts are snapshots taken the moment the analysis is complete after the closure of a full bar.

There are two fundamental pieces of information to be gleaned from a chart:
  • The current phasing analysis (as indicated by the Hurst diamond notation at the foot of the chart)
  • The interactions between price and the 20-day FLD.
The text information presented on a chart follows this format:

  • INSTRUMENT: VIEW (duration of one bar)
  • Last price [time price was received] Analysis: [time of last analysis] (Timezone of all times relative to EST) Volatility: average price move over past 14 bars (the same value expressed as a percentage)
  • PRICE and FLD INTERACTION: This describes what the most recent interaction was, and the next interaction is expected to be.
  • TRADING OPPORTUNITY: The trading opportunity is presented, including the entry price, the stoploss level and targets T1 and T2.

Note that the times given in the information block are the same as the times on the chart. The timezone is provided relative to Eastern Time (either EST: Eastern Standard Time or EDT: Eastern Daylight Time). Information about EST/EDT time (and how it differs from your local timezone) can be found here.

Refreshing Charts

Back to Contents
Signal charts are updated on the Hurst Signals server shortly after the close of each bar on the chart.
All your charts refresh every ten minutes if your browser supports auto-refreshing of web pages so as to ensure that you are not viewing an old chart (if you leave your charts open and come back to them after some time).
If your browser does not support auto-refreshing, or if you would like to view the chart the moment it is available you should simply use the refresh button to refresh your chart.

System Availability

Back to Contents
We have taken extensive steps to ensure the reliability and availability of Hurst Signals, including automatic backup systems, redundancy and advanced 24 hour monitoring systems. Nevertheless there are a few points to bear in mind:
  • We use highest quality cloud-based virtual computing equipment. Occasionally an image of a chart can become corrupted as it is transmitted between different systems and thus very occasionally a chart image might not be available.
  • Hurst Signals are themselves reliant on price data obtained from third party data providers. If a data feed is temporarily unavailable there will be an inevitable disruption in the updating of Hurst Signals.
  • The backup and redundancy systems we use ensure high availability of Hurst Signals, but your own internet connectivity is an important link in the process as well.

Because of these issues we strongly recommend that you take precautions to protect yourself from rare but unavoidable interruptions to the Hurst Signals service:

  • Make sure that you have stoploss orders in place for all your trades.
  • Never enter a trade without a clear idea of how you would monitor that trade for yourself.
  • Make a plan ahead of the time for what you would do if your Hurst Signals were unavailable and you had an open trade. For instance:
    • You might want to raise stoploss levels to a break-even level.
    • Possibly you would exit all open positions.
    • Or perhaps you would be confident enough to monitor the position yourself

Whatever your approach is, make sure that you have a plan, and are not caught in a situation where you have money at risk and no plan for what to do.

Trading Sessions

Back to Contents
Trading sessions are periods of time when the markets are open and can be traded. Hurst signals are generated for future contracts or on forex pairs which allows for the maximum trading opportunities.

Of course when markets are closed for trading (such as over the weekend or on trading holidays) there is no data available for analysis and no Hurst Signals are generated.

Another login?

Back to Contents
Your activation key enables the viewing of charts from a single dashboard. If you access your Hurst Signals from a separate device (such as from a mobile device when away from your desk) then all charts opened from a previous dashboard instance will be relaced with an image telling you that there has been another login on your account. When you return to your desk you should simply close any charts and click on the refresh button of your browser on your dashboard which will effect a fresh login to your account, and provide refreshed access to your Hurst Signal charts.
NOTE: Some overzealous anti-virus systems protect your system by visiting every page you visit from an automated server, which has the effect of logging into your dashboard from another location. If this happens to you, please contact our support team for help with resolving the issue.
